Nothing will get you onto one of Our Lists faster than playing the Devil. I mean, it doesn't get more Evil than that. And that's certainly how Cool Bad Guy Max von Sydow has made this list. He played Leland Gaunt aka Beelzebub aka Lucifer aka Michael Bolton aka the Prince of Darkness aka The Devil in the film adaptation of Stephen King's Needful Things. In it, Mr. von Sydow's character goes to a small town in Maine (are you shocked? I knew you would be.) where he opens a store called, you guessed it, Needful Things. In it, he carries all manner of junk, er, treasures. In fact, many of his customers find Just What They're Looking For. And the price is Just Right. The catch: Mr. Gaunt expects a favor in return for his generosity.

What ensues is more or less the breakdown of civilization as we know it in this Sleepy Maine Town. It's neighbor against neighbor. Friend against loved one. Priest against Minister. Dogs and cats living together. The seas turning to blood. Well, okay. Maybe it didn't get quite that far, but there were some pretty cool explosions. And through it all, Mr. Gaunt watched and waited and smoked his really long, thin cigar. He was all manner of evil and he had a nifty accent to prove it. Well done. Mr. von Sydow. Plus he gets to star opposite Hot Bad Guy Ed Harris, who wears a cute sheriff's uniform. Yay!

Please Note: This homage will be updated as soon as I can bring myself to rewatch the film version of Flash Gordon, in which Mr. von Sydow plays Ming the Merciless.

Coolness:
Badness: well, he is the Devil
Guyness: attempted seduction of the Sheriff's Lady, Oh Yeah!
